Wendy, whose full name is Son Seung-wan (손승완), is a South Korean singer and a member of the globally popular K-pop Red Velvet.

Born on February 21, 1994, in Seongbuk District, Seoul, Wendy’s early life took a turn when her family moved to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. There, she attended St. Joseph’s High School before eventually returning to South Korea to chase her dream of becoming a musician.

Wendy’s primary influence was her love for music and singing in both Korean and English. This led her to audition for SM Entertainment, one of the most prominent K-pop agencies, while she was still living in Canada.

Wendy’s big break came when she participated in the SM Global Audition in 2012, which was a worldwide talent search held by SM Entertainment. She impressed the judges with her powerful voice and was selected as a trainee. She moved to South Korea and officially became a trainee under SM Entertainment. She trained for around two years at SM Entertainment.

In 2014, Wendy officially joined Red Velvet as its main vocalist. Before the group debuted, she was a member of SM Rookies, a pre-debut project designed to introduce potential future idols to the public. Wendy was introduced as part of SM Rookies alongside other future members of Red Velvet, including Seulgi.

Red Velvet, the group Wendy is known for, debuted in 2014 under SM Entertainment and quickly made a name for itself with its unique style and musical diversity. Known for hits like “Ice Cream Cake,” “Bad Boy,” and “Psycho,” the group earned both local and international acclaim, with Wendy playing a key role as one of the main singers.

While Wendy has achieved great success with Red Velvet, she’s also ventured into a solo career. In April 2021, she released her first solo album, “Like Water,” which was met with positive feedback from both fans and critics, showcasing her versatility and growth as an artist.

She’s appeared on a variety of popular shows, including “King of Masked Singer,” “We Got Married,” “Sister’s Slam Dunk,” and “I Live Alone.” These appearances helped Wendy expand her presence in the entertainment industry, giving fans a glimpse into her personality and life beyond the stage.

  • In December 2019, Wendy suffered a serious injury. She fractured her pelvis and wrist, which required a period of recovery. After several months of rehabilitation, Wendy returned to her career in 2020.
  • Wendy is fluent in both Korean and English, thanks to her time spent in Canada. She is known for being a private individual and has not shared much about her personal life. As of now, there have been no reports of her having a boyfriend.
  • If you’re one of the younger K-pop fans, you might know Wendy only as a member of Red Velvet. However, she is an international artist who proved her status as a global star seven years ago by working with world-renowned artists.
  • Wendy has collaborated with several internationally renowned artists, delivering awe-inspiring performances. One of her most notable collaborations was with the legendary singer John Legend. In January 2020, Wendy and John Legend performed together at the Golden Disc Awards in South Korea, singing the beautiful duet “We Belong Together.” This performance was celebrated worldwide and showcased Wendy’s exceptional vocal abilities and her international reach.
  • In addition to John Legend, Wendy also had the pleasure of collaborating with global pop star Ricky Martin. In December 2018, Wendy and Ricky Martin released the song “Vente Pa’ Ca.”
